ScribeQ Setup & Handset Guide
Everything you need to configure ScribeQ for smooth, uninterrupted ambient voice typing across any Android handset.
1. Android 13, 14 & 15: Allowing Restricted Settings
Because ScribeQ is currently distributed via early-access direct download (APK), Android's operating system applies a security filter called Restricted Settings to prevent untrusted background services.
If Accessibility is Greyed Out
If Android displays "Restricted setting: For your security, this setting is currently unavailable" when trying to enable ScribeQ:
- Go to your phone's Settings → Apps → ScribeQ (or long-press the ScribeQ icon on your home screen and tap App Info).
- Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner.
- Tap Allow restricted settings and verify with your fingerprint or PIN.
- Return to ScribeQ and tap Enable Voice Typing to turn on the service.
Note: Once ScribeQ is installed from the official Google Play Store, this step will be completely eliminated.
2. Mobile Banking Apps & Accessibility Compatibility
Major banks in Australia, Singapore, and globally (such as Commonwealth Bank, DBS, OCBC, and UOB) run automated security scans that temporarily block access if they detect active sideloaded accessibility apps on the device.
ScribeQ is 100% private, never records keystrokes, and has zero visibility into your banking transactions. To use your banking apps without friction, choose one of the following methods:
Method A: Use the 1-Tap Quick Settings Tile (Universal)
ScribeQ includes a dedicated Android Quick Settings tile right in your notification shade:
- Swipe down twice from the top of your screen to open your Quick Settings panel.
- Tap the Edit (Pencil) icon to add the ScribeQ tile to your active toggles.
- Before banking: Tap the ScribeQ tile once to temporarily pause the service. Your banking app will open immediately.
- After banking: Tap the tile again to resume instant voice typing.
Method B: Samsung Secure Folder (Samsung Galaxy)
For Samsung users, Samsung Knox hardware isolation provides seamless coexistence:
- Open Secure Folder on your Samsung Galaxy.
- Add your banking apps (DBS, CommBank, OCBC, etc.) inside Secure Folder.
- Because Secure Folder isolates accessibility permissions from your personal profile, your banking apps will never detect ScribeQ and will launch without interruption.
Method C: Android Private Space (Google Pixel / Android 15+)
If you are using a Pixel or phone running Android 15:
- Open Settings → Security & privacy → Private space.
- Install your banking apps inside Private Space. They run in an isolated sandbox completely separate from your day-to-day accessibility tools.
3. Battery Optimization (Preventing Background Sleep)
To ensure ScribeQ is always instantly ready when you tap the floating microphone, exempt it from Android's background battery killer:
Recommended Battery Setting
- Open phone Settings → Apps → ScribeQ → Battery.
- Select Unrestricted (or disable "Pause app activity if unused").
- This ensures Android never kills the audio engine while your screen is locked.
4. Audio Engine & Headset Optimization
- Bluetooth Earbuds: ScribeQ automatically detects when Sony WF-1000XM5, AirPods, or Bluetooth headsets are connected and routes audio through your earbud microphone.
- Out & About Mode: If you are walking down a windy street or in a loud coffee shop, open ScribeQ Settings and switch your mode to Out & About for maximum background noise filtering.
